The Reckless Hearts – Get Up and Run (Off the Hip)
by Michael Toland
2 August 2009
"The lure of two guitars, bass, drums and a batch of simple pop hooks remains irresistible to so many young men. So it is with the RECKLESS HEARTS, a Milwaukee quartet steeped in the power mod pop rock of an era none of the members are old enough to remember – sort of an American analog to the LEN PRICE 3. On Get Up and Run, the Hearts proffer carefully constructed pop songs performed with caffeinated abandon, banging out such superlative stompers as “Personal Property,” “Faces in the Pages” and the R&B-flavored “Midnight in the Sitay.” No one-trick pony, the boys show themselves to be equally adept at the folk rock balladry of the gorgeous “Before the Summer is Gone.” Admittedly, there’s no innovation going on here – just a tradition kept alive by youthful enthusiasm and raw talent. It may be an old story, but the infusion of young blood keeps it fresh in the retelling."

"With ex members of the Jet Set and the Danger, Milwaukeeís Reckless Hearts are busy embracing all that is power pop. A British feel sets the backdrop for songs that are quirky, up beat and amazingly fun. Live, the band combines elements of glam, punk and mod rock for a show that could have easily fit into the Liverpool scene of the mid sixties. While performance and musicianship are solid, there is nothing pretentious here. Accessibility by way of melody best describes this group. Check ëem out Feb 13 at Frankís Power Plant in Bay View for an acoustic performance."

" Milwaukee band The Reckless Hearts is a relatively new name on the local music scene, though there are some familiar faces in its ranks, including members of ’60s-worshipping groups The Danger and The Jet Set. But while The Danger had an aggressive punk-rock edge, The Reckless Hearts are a power-pop band through and through, with songs like “Yer A Blur” recalling the guitar-heavy melodies of ’90s bands like The Posies and Teenage Fanclub. The band will launch a tour in support of its new debut full-length, Get Up And Run, with this show."

"The Reckless Hearts is the latest band from most of the guys who used to make up The Danger, who were for years among the youngest of Milwaukee’s glam-rock revivalists. The name is new but the sound is much the same: The band still conjures T. Rex at their most down to earth and The Buzzcocks at their sweetest, with ample traces of The Only Ones’ sunny power-pop harmonies."

...."Relaxed, good-natured and hospitable (they did, after all, invite us into their secret closet of ‘swords and porn’) the quartet wasted little time busting into spirited takes from their debut effort Get Up and Run such as the reverb heavy “Yer A Blur,” “Reckless Heart,” the spastic garage rocker “Personal Property” and the radio friendly (well, in the early ‘70s anyway) pop gem “Much Too.” Fittingly, they also dusted off a great cover of The Small Faces’ “Itchycoo Park,” that paid direct homage to their early ‘60s influences. And as professed in the chorus, this song (as well as the entire session) was “all too beautiful.”
